On a drive through the Paint Rock Valley in North Alabama, I noticed a tree skeleton on the side of a small creek. It was fall and the colors had muted to a pre-winter grey. The fields around the tree were dormant. I decided to give the tree some leaves and change seasons to late summer.
I used a combination of yellows and black to make most of the greens in this painting. The evergreen in the background is a bluer green and draws the eye back giving the fields dimension. The early morning time frame casts shadows on the ground and lends to drawing the eye up to the tree where the morning light begins to fade to the shadow side. Short, choppy strokes in the field highlighted by India Yellow tone helps bring the field to life and balance the cool olive green with warmth.
