Towards the end of winter's pause in flowers, the southern Camelia blooms. Some are white (which I have) and then range from deep red to a blush of pink. I photographed this one late in the winter and so enjoyed doing a large painting from a four inch blossom. The reference photo led me in a journey of rises and valleys in each petal. And I loved how the stamens peek out of the furl of the two most inner petals. The deep green waxy leaves help direct the eye up and around the canvas. The faintest of pinks to the deep pink on the edge of the petals foretell the deeper colors to come. What a joy to find flowers in winter!
