Beautiful Grand Mesa, Colorado inspired this painting. Grand Mesa is skiing, hiking, fishing and inspirational. Beautiful streams like this one feed lakes in the area and it is rich in wild and plant life. The textures of the water against the logs against the rocks against the trees caught my imagination. I loved the vertical tree trunks contrasting with the horizontal stream rushing by. Light filters through the trees to highlight the architecture of the hillside above the stream. The tips of the evergreen in the center glowed in the shifting light. The underpainting in monochromatic brown, lends depth to the actual gray rocks. Dark blues in the trees and the water complement each other and show off the lighter yellow greens forming the tips of the tree branches.
It is always a joy to capture moments in nature. As I experienced painting this piece, I felt the rich outdoor breeze and could smell the trees. I imagined small animals drinking from the stream and the fish that swim by in their everyday living.
